NASA has revisited the story of astronaut Shannon Lucid's record-setting mission aboard the Russian space station Mir, highlighting an image of Lucid checking on wheat growing in the station's Svet greenhouse just days before she returned to Earth.
Lucid, who joined NASA in 1978 as one of the agency's first six female astronauts, lived and worked aboard Mir for six months alongside two Russian cosmonauts. During her stay, she took part in life science research conducted in orbit.
Her extended stay aboard Mir set a record for the longest spaceflight by a US astronaut at the time, and remains a notable chapter in the history of US-Russian cooperation in space, which included multiple joint missions to Mir during the 1990s as part of the Shuttle-Mir program.
NASA's release did not provide additional detail beyond the image and its description of Lucid's work aboard the station.
