A senior editor at Le Monde has argued that the treatment of Washington's Kennedy Center under President Donald Trump illustrates a pressure that could eventually reach cultural institutions in France.

Michel Guerrin, editor-in-chief at the French newspaper, wrote that over the past three years, language from far-right and some right-wing and left-wing leaders in Europe has increasingly taken on Trump-like tones, including arguments that culture should serve elected officials and that artists seen as tarnishing a country's image using public money should be sidelined.

Guerrin described the changes at the Kennedy Center as a dramatic and, in his view, unimaginable shift, while cautioning that similar dynamics could someday affect cultural venues in France.
