Bayeux Tapestry: the British Museum bans cameras in front of the crowd

The British Museum has stopped taking photographs in the room where the Bayeux Tapestry is exhibited in London. This decision follows the large influx of visitors who came to admire and photograph medieval embroidery.

The institution explains that visitors stopping to photograph every detail of the work slowed down the circulation in the museum, complicating the visit for all those present.

An exceptional loan from France

The Bayeux Tapestry, a medieval embroidery retracing the Norman conquest of England, is being hosted in London as part of a loan described as historic by the two countries. The agreement is due to continue until 2027.

This loan remains a rare event as the work has rarely travelled outside France throughout its history. The museum has not indicated whether other measures will be put in place to manage the number of visitors during the exhibition.
