The British Museum bans photos of the Bayeux Tapestry
Faced with the influx of visitors who came to photograph medieval embroidery, the London institution has chosen to ban photography to improve the flow of traffic in its rooms.

The British Museum has announced a ban on photographs in the space dedicated to the Bayeux Tapestry, currently on display in London. The measure is intended to respond to the influx of visitors wishing to immortalize the details of the famous medieval embroidery.
According to the London-based institution, the fact that many visitors stopped for a long time to photograph each scene of the work significantly slowed down the circulation in the exhibition spaces, making it more difficult for the entire public to visit.
A historic loan until 2027
The Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered medieval masterpiece retracing the Norman conquest of England, is on display at the British Museum as part of an exceptional loan from France. This agreement, described as historic, is due to continue until 2027.
This loan is a rare event, as the work has left French territory very little during its history. The museum did not specify whether other measures would be taken to manage the influx of the public throughout the duration of the exhibition.
