Musk Voices AI Safety Concerns While Opposing Regulation, Report Says

A CNBC report describes a week of shifting alliances for Elon Musk, who agreed with rival AI executives even as he clashed with President Trump and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.

Elon Musk spent the past week emphasizing the importance of artificial intelligence safety even as he continued to push back against government regulation of the technology, according to a report by CNBC published Sept. 18.

The report said Musk, who has spent roughly a decade clashing with other figures in the AI industry, found himself in agreement with the chief executives of Anthropic and OpenAI on certain points during the week. At the same time, CNBC reported that Musk was contradicted by President Donald Trump and by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

CNBC characterized the developments as reflecting a period of unusual and shifting alliances within the AI industry, noting that Musk has historically been at odds with many of the same executives he appeared to align with during the week in question.

The report did not provide further detail on the specific statements made by the executives or officials involved. CNBC has been contacted for additional comment.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before departing the company in 2018 and later launching his own AI venture, xAI. He has been a vocal advocate for AI safety measures in public statements over the years, while also opposing certain regulatory proposals he has argued could hinder innovation or benefit larger competitors.
