Hurricane Lowell knocks out power across Kauai as storm moves away
Nearly all residents on Hawaii's island of Kauai lost power Tuesday as Hurricane Lowell brought fierce winds and heavy rains.
Hurricane Lowell pounded Hawaii's western islands on Tuesday with damaging winds and heavy rains, causing widespread power outages on Kauai, which has a population of 73,000. According to the Kauai island utility cooperative, nearly all of its members were without power early Tuesday as fierce winds downed trees across the island.
The center of the storm passed west of the islands and was moving away, but authorities warned that flooding and mudslides will continue to pose a risk to residents.
