Typhoon Dujuan kills at least four in Japan, triggers landslides near Tokyo
Heavy rain and violent winds from Typhoon Dujuan left tens of thousands of homes without power and prompted rescue efforts across homes damaged by landslides.
Typhoon Dujuan has killed at least four people and injured 22 others in Japan, authorities said on Tuesday, as the storm swept through the region and triggered landslides that damaged homes near Tokyo.
Rescuers were searching for people believed to be missing after homes collapsed in landslides caused by the storm. Tens of thousands of houses near Tokyo remained without power in the aftermath, and the storm also caused significant disruption to travel across the affected areas.
Storm weakening as it moves away
Dujuan brought violent winds of up to 144 km/h (89 mph) at its peak. By Tuesday morning, the typhoon was moving away from Japan, allowing authorities to downgrade most of the heavy rain and landslide warnings that had been in effect.
Officials continued to assess the full extent of the damage on Tuesday, with power restoration and clearing of storm debris ongoing in the hardest-hit areas. Japan is regularly affected by typhoons during this period of the year, and authorities have systems in place for evacuation and emergency response when severe storms make landfall or pass close to populated areas.
Further updates on the death toll, the scale of power outages and the pace of recovery were expected as authorities completed their assessments.
