Fuel: the government authorises the sale of summer diesel until 15 November

The government has decided to exceptionally authorise the sale of so-called "summer" diesel until 15 November, postponing a regulatory deadline usually set for 1^November by two weeks. This measure aims to alleviate supply difficulties encountered by fuel distributors.

Normally, regulations require distributors to market,^{from 1 November} , a so-called "winter" diesel. This fuel is formulated to withstand lower temperatures than the diesel used the rest of the year, in order to avoid the crystallisation and filtration problems that can occur in diesel engines when the mercury drops.

The postponement of this obligation to mid-November is an exceptional departure from the usual timetable. The authorities justify this additional delay by tensions in the supply chain, without the precise nature of these difficulties having been further detailed at this stage.

This decision allows distributors to continue to sell their summer diesel stocks for two more weeks before switching to the winter formulation, a flexibility that should help secure the supply of fuel during this seasonal transition period.

The measure is part of a context where the management of fuel stocks is regularly subject to ad hoc regulatory adjustments, with the authorities having the possibility to adapt the deadlines according to market conditions and the logistics capacities of distributors.
