Fuel: the sale of summer diesel allowed until November 15 in France

The French authorities have authorised the sale of summer diesel until 15 November, an exceptional derogation intended to respond to fuel supply difficulties.

In normal times, regulations require distributors to market, from 1 November, a so-called "winter" diesel, formulated to withstand lower temperatures and avoid fuel fluidity problems in cold weather. This obligation has been postponed by two weeks this year, on an exceptional basis.

This decision aims to give distributors more time to adapt, in a context of tensions on fuel supply. By extending the period during which summer diesel can continue to be sold, the State intends to avoid a shortage or additional tension on the stocks available at the pump.

Summer and winter diesel are distinguished by their resistance to low temperatures: the former can present risks of crystallisation in cold weather, which normally justifies its replacement by a winter formulation from 1 November. The extension of this deadline to 15 November is therefore a temporary adjustment measure rather than a lasting change in regulations.

The authorities have not specified, according to the available information, whether this postponement could be extended in the following years or whether it is a one-off response to the supply difficulties observed this year.
