Zelensky Says Ukrainians Under Occupation Must Have Hope Russia Will Face Accountability

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told participants at the Crimea Platform that Ukrainians living under occupation must be given hope that Russia will eventually be held accountable for its actions in the war.

Zelensky said a full return to life governed by international law is only possible if Ukraine's territorial sovereignty is completely restored, explicitly including the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014 and has controlled since.

The Crimea Platform, an international forum established to coordinate diplomatic pressure around the status of Crimea, has served as a recurring venue for Ukrainian officials to press allied governments to maintain support for the country's territorial claims and to avoid recognizing Russian control over annexed or occupied areas.

Zelensky's remarks reiterate a consistent position from Kyiv that any lasting peace settlement must include the return of Crimea and other occupied territories to Ukrainian sovereignty, rather than treating the current front lines as a basis for a permanent settlement.

The comments come as international attention continues to focus on the trajectory of the war and on what conditions might eventually be acceptable to both Kyiv and its Western partners in any future negotiations over occupied Ukrainian territory.
