UN Warns Yemen Displacement Could Reach Record Levels Amid Fighting

The United Nations has warned that the number of people displaced in Yemen under extreme conditions could reach record levels, as fighting intensifies between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed loyalist troops.

At least 154 people have died in recent days in the fighting, according to reports, as violence pushes growing numbers of residents to flee both within the country and abroad.

More than 130,000 people have already been displaced since the start of the month, according to the UN's refugee agency, which said that figure could climb as high as 230,000 as the fighting continues.

The escalation adds further strain to Yemen's humanitarian crisis, which has persisted for years amid a conflict between Houthi forces and government-aligned troops backed by Saudi Arabia.

Aid organizations have repeatedly warned that Yemen's humanitarian infrastructure remains under severe pressure, with displaced populations facing shortages of food, shelter and medical care.

The UN's refugee agency said it continues to monitor the situation closely as displacement figures are updated, with the agency and its partners working to respond to the growing needs of affected populations.
