UK Retailers to Offer 100,000 Work Placements for Unemployed Young People
More than 40 retailers, including M&S, Asda and John Lewis, will partner with the DWP to give 18- to 24-year-olds not in education or work short-term placements aimed at building job skills.
UK retailers plan to create up to 100,000 short-term placements over the next three years for young people who are not in employment, education or training, according to the Guardian.
The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the report said. More than 40 retailers are participating, including Marks & Spencer, Pets at Home, Asda and the John Lewis Partnership.
The placements will be offered to those categorized as "Neet" — not in employment, education or training — aged 18 to 24, and will last between two and four weeks, according to the source.
The stated aim of the program is to give participants "the skills and confidence needed to take their first step into work," the retailers said, as cited in the report.
The initiative is intended to serve as an early step onto the employment ladder for young people currently outside the workforce and education system, the report said.
