Chiltern Railways has entered public ownership, becoming the sixth train operator to be nationalised under the Labour government's rail renationalisation programme, according to the Guardian.

The operator runs commuter and long-distance services on the Chiltern mainline between London Marylebone and Birmingham. It transferred to public ownership on Sunday, the report said.

The move forms part of the government's broader ambition to bring all major passenger rail operators in Britain back under state control. According to the Guardian, the remaining four operators still in private hands are expected to be nationalised by the end of 2027.

Chiltern Railways is the latest in a series of operators to be brought into public ownership since 2025 as Labour continues its programme to reshape the structure of the rail industry.

Further details on the timetable for the remaining operators, and on the operational or financial implications of the change for Chiltern's services, were not specified in the available report.
