Typhoon Dujuan: at least two dead near Tokyo, warnings gradually lifted

Typhoon Dujuan has killed at least two people in the Tokyo area, according to Japanese authorities, after hitting the archipelago with heavy rain and strong winds.

More than 1.6 million residents of the capital and neighbouring regions had been called to evacuate before the storm arrived, as part of the precautionary measures taken by local authorities.

On Tuesday morning, as the typhoon moved away from the Japanese coast, authorities began lifting their main warnings, a sign of a gradual improvement in the situation in the worst-hit areas.

Dujuan's passage is part of a series of severe weather events that regularly hit Japan during the typhoon season, forcing authorities to strengthen evacuation and surveillance systems in the most exposed coastal and urban areas.

Authorities did not immediately specify the exact number of people injured or the extent of the material damage caused by the storm.
