Trump set to meet Xi as Congress considers bill on artificial superintelligence

US President Donald Trump is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, as Congress considers a bill that would restrict the development of artificial superintelligence, according to The Guardian's live coverage of US politics.

Lawmakers have so far done relatively little to rein in the artificial intelligence industry, even as some of its most prominent leaders have warned about potentially catastrophic risks associated with advanced AI systems, the report noted.

The planned meeting between Trump and Xi comes during a busy stretch of diplomacy at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Speaking at the UN, Trump reiterated a threat to "annihilate" Iran and "drive them into Hell" if the country's leadership did not capitulate and reach a deal, according to the report. He also said he was working closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine toward ending the war between the two countries.

Trump used his UN remarks to defend his administration's actions in Latin America, including the arrest of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, as well as drone strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific. He also said it was "unacceptable" for the US to share a border with Mexico under conditions he described as cartel control, and pointed to regime change in Cuba, while rejecting calls for what he termed a "globalist scheme" to control artificial intelligence.

Shortly after his UN address, Trump signed a deal concerning Greenland. Greenland's prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said the agreement "recognises the US['s] defining historical and ongoing contributions to the security and defence of Greenland" while also respecting "the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as Greenland's right to self-determination."
