Tropical sea turtle nests on California beach in historic first
An olive ridley sea turtle laid eggs at Huntington Beach, marking the species' northernmost nesting on record in the region.

A tropical sea turtle came ashore at Huntington Beach in Southern California last weekend and laid eggs in the sand, in what officials describe as a historic first for the region. Onlookers on the beach around sunset watched in surprise as the female olive ridley sea turtle crawled out of the surf and began nesting.
Justin Viezbicke, California stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said the sighting excited both beachgoers and wildlife officials, calling the reason behind the turtle nesting farther north than usual the "million dollar question."
An unusual sighting
Olive ridley sea turtles are more commonly associated with nesting in tropical and subtropical regions, making their appearance on a Southern California beach notable to marine biologists and conservation officials who track sea turtle populations along the US West Coast.
Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the turtle's unusual nesting location, with NOAA representatives indicating that understanding what drove the behavior remains an open question for researchers.
The nesting event adds to a growing body of observations of marine species appearing outside their typical ranges, which scientists continue to study for what it may indicate about changing ocean conditions.
