Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched the fourth phase of the province's Green Tractor Scheme on Wednesday, opening digital balloting for farmers seeking to benefit from the subsidized tractor program.
Alongside the fourth-phase launch, the provincial government also opened the application portal for the scheme's fifth phase. Under that upcoming phase, 19,500 tractors are set to be provided to farmers across Punjab during the current fiscal year.
Digital balloting process
The scheme uses a digital balloting system intended to distribute tractors to eligible farmers in a transparent manner, reducing the potential for manipulation in the allocation process. Applicants apply through the online portal and are selected through the electronic draw.
The Green Tractor Scheme has been positioned by the Punjab government as part of a broader push to modernize agricultural equipment access for farmers in the province, with successive phases aimed at expanding the number of subsidized tractors reaching rural communities.
Provincial officials did not immediately detail the total budget allocated for the fifth phase or a specific timeline for when the 19,500 tractors would be distributed once the application and balloting process concludes.
