The international goal of protecting a third of the planet's land and oceans by 2030, adopted at the end of 2022, will be at the heart of discussions at the next biodiversity COP scheduled to take place in Yerevan, according to Le Monde.

This commitment, known as the "30x30" goal, was adopted at a previous international summit on biodiversity, with the aim of halting the accelerated loss of global biodiversity by significantly expanding the terrestrial and marine areas with protected status.

According to several non-governmental organizations cited in the report, while progress has been made in conservation, humanity is still far below this goal with a few years to go before the deadline set for 2030.

The issue of the financing of protected areas, their effective management on the ground, as well as the recognition of the rights of local and indigenous populations living in or near these areas, is among the issues regularly raised by experts and NGOs working on this issue.

The holding of the biodiversity COP in Yerevan should allow the signatory states to take stock of the progress made since the adoption of the objective, and to identify the additional measures needed to hope to achieve it within the set deadlines.
