Pakistan Installs Over 2.12 Million Smart Meters to Curb Power Theft

Pakistan has installed more than 2.12 million smart electricity meters nationwide as part of an effort to curb electricity theft and improve billing accuracy, according to a report from the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Officials said the initiative is also intended to strengthen revenue collection for the country's power sector, which has long struggled with losses attributed to theft and billing inefficiencies.

Tackling grid losses

Electricity theft and distribution losses have been persistent challenges for Pakistan's power sector, contributing to financial strain on utility companies and complicating efforts to stabilize the national grid.

Smart meters are designed to provide more accurate, real-time consumption data, making it more difficult for theft to go undetected and helping utilities better manage billing and collection processes.

The government has described the smart meter rollout as part of a broader push to modernize the country's energy infrastructure and reduce systemic losses within the power sector.
