New Exhibition Marks 20th Anniversary of Gordon Parks Foundation

An exhibition opening in New York will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gordon Parks Foundation, showcasing photographs by the artist alongside recollections from people who knew him personally, according to a report by The Guardian.

The exhibit, titled "Gordon Parks: Voices in the Mirror," will be hosted at the Jack Shainman Gallery, the report said. The title references Parks' final memoir, published in 1990, according to The Guardian.

Gordon Parks was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, and became known not only as a photographer but also as a poet, composer, director and mentor, according to The Guardian. The report described him as a "Renaissance man" whose creative work spanned multiple disciplines throughout his career.

Parks used his photography to depict the lives, experiences and humanity of the people he documented, The Guardian reported.

The Gordon Parks Foundation was established in 2006 by Parks along with Philip B Kunhardt Jr, an editor at Life magazine, according to the report. The foundation was created to promote and support artistic and educational initiatives that continue Parks' legacy and vision, The Guardian said.

As part of the anniversary exhibition, individuals who knew Parks are expected to discuss what they consider some of his most powerful images, according to The Guardian.
