Merz vows to remain German chancellor after CDU's state election losses

The chancellor's party suffered heavy defeats in two regional votes, including in Angela Merkel's home state, according to the Guardian.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he intends to remain in office despite heavy losses for his CDU party in two regional elections, according to the Guardian.

The CDU polled just 4.9% in the home state of former chancellor Angela Merkel, the report said, following a defeat two weeks earlier in Saxony-Anhalt, where the party won 17% against nearly 44% for the AfD.

The Guardian reported that Merz's approval ratings remain low and that far-right support has continued to grow, though he has said he will stay the course.
