German Foreign Minister Calls for Black Sea Ceasefire to Save Grain Exports

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for a ceasefire in the Black Sea, arguing that halting hostilities in the region is a necessary first step toward resuming grain shipments that have been disrupted by the ongoing war.

Wadephul's appeal reflects growing concern among Western officials that continued instability in the Black Sea shipping corridor is putting significant volumes of Ukrainian grain at risk of spoiling before it can reach international markets.

A previous Black Sea grain agreement, brokered with international mediation, had allowed shipments to resume for a period before collapsing amid disputes between the parties. Since then, exporters have relied on alternative routes, including overland transport through European Union member states, though these have proven more costly and less reliable.

Wadephul did not lay out a detailed proposal for how a new ceasefire might be structured or monitored, but framed it as an urgent, practical step distinct from broader ceasefire or peace negotiations over the wider conflict.

The call comes amid continued diplomatic activity among Western governments over the war, including discussions on additional military support for Ukraine and long-term reconstruction planning.
