France 24 reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) representatives held a press conference on Monday following what the outlet describes as the party's worst regional election defeat in postwar Germany.

According to the report, Merz called the result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania a "disaster," as the CDU fell below the 5% threshold needed to enter the state parliament.

France 24's Europe editor Armen Georgian said Merz and Berlin candidate Stefan Evers offered no concrete solutions to the defeat, while pledging to keep the governing coalition together in the name of a "democratic future," the report said.
