Rwanda and Belgium announced the restoration of their diplomatic relations, ending a rupture initiated by Kigali in March 2025.
Rwanda had accused Belgium of taking the side of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the conflict that has pitted the two neighboring countries against each other for several years, particularly in eastern Congo where armed groups are active.
The resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries comes amid a shifting regional context, marked by international efforts to ease tensions in the African Great Lakes region.
Belgium, the former colonial power in the Democratic Republic of Congo, maintains complex historical ties with both countries in the region, which had made the rupture of relations with Rwanda particularly noteworthy on the European and African diplomatic stage.
The precise modalities of this normalization, as well as its impact on the situation in eastern DRC, were not immediately detailed by the two governments.
