"The Golan will remain Syrian territory": Syrian president warns Israel from the UN

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly that the Golan Heights "will remain Syrian territory," reaffirming Damascus' historic position in the Israeli-occupied territory.

This statement comes after Colombia recently recognized Israel's annexation of the Golan, thus joining the position adopted by the United States, which was the first to recognize this annexation. However, the international community remains mostly committed to international law, which does not recognize this annexation.

The Syrian president also denounced, during his speech, the military operations carried out by Israel in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, without detailing the scale or precise nature of these operations in the excerpts reported.

Al-Sharaa's speech at the UN comes in a regional context marked by significant political reshuffles in Syria since the change of power in Damascus, as well as persistent tensions with Israel over the Golan and other border areas.
