Heathrow's Third Runway Plan Raises Questions Over Heathrow Express's Future

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport are prompting fresh scrutiny of the Heathrow Express rail service, amid questions over high fares and relatively low passenger numbers on the line.

Under Heathrow's roughly £33 billion expansion plan, the airport could see between 100,000 and 200,000 additional passengers travelling to and from it each day once the new runway is completed.

The expansion also includes moving part of the M25, the UK's busiest motorway, to make room for a new runway measuring about 2.2 miles, or 3.5 kilometres, in length.

Beyond the infrastructure challenge of relocating the motorway, planners face the task of finding sustainable ways to move a much larger number of passengers and staff to and from the airport without further increasing road congestion.

Discussions about the future of rail options like the Heathrow Express are expected to continue as the broader expansion plan moves forward, with no final decisions on the service's future confirmed.
