Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party made significant gains in two state elections held Sunday, as Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union suffered another setback, France 24 reported.

According to the broadcaster, projections showed the CDU failing to enter the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the AfD placed first, while the left-wing Die Linke led the vote in Berlin.

France 24 noted that the AfD's gains build on a previous victory in Saxony-Anhalt.
