People living in the eurozone have been invited to take part in a public vote on the design of future euro banknotes, according to a report by France 24.

The proposed designs reportedly include portraits of historic figures such as physicist Marie Curie and Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci. Among the options presented to the public is also a vertical banknote format, a departure from the traditional horizontal design currently used across the eurozone.

According to the report, the new banknotes are expected to enter circulation around 2030, though the exact design has not yet been finalized and will depend on the outcome of the public consultation.

The report also noted that the banknote design vote comes against a backdrop of economic strain in parts of the eurozone. It cited rising fuel prices linked to the war in Iran as a source of pressure on consumers, and described a scuffle between fishermen and police in southern France as fishermen attempted to blockade an oil depot in protest.

France 24 did not provide further details on the timeline for the banknote vote's conclusion or on the specific location and outcome of the fishermen's protest.
