Elon Musk Praises China's Manufacturing Strength, Calls Shanghai Tesla Plant 'a Gem'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has praised China's manufacturing capabilities, describing the company's Shanghai Gigafactory as "a gem" of its global production network, according to Anadolu Agency.

Musk's comments highlighted the scale of the Shanghai facility, which has produced more than 4.5 million vehicles since it began operations, a figure that accounts for over 45 percent of Tesla's cumulative global vehicle output.

The Shanghai plant, Tesla's first factory outside the United States, opened in 2019 and has since become one of the company's most productive manufacturing sites, serving both the Chinese domestic market and exports to other regions including Europe and Asia.

Musk's remarks come as Tesla continues to navigate a competitive Chinese electric vehicle market, where domestic manufacturers such as BYD have expanded rapidly and captured significant market share. Despite the competition, Tesla has maintained a substantial manufacturing presence in the country.

China has positioned itself as a global hub for electric vehicle and battery manufacturing, with government incentives and an extensive supply chain helping to draw major international automakers, including Tesla, to expand operations there.

The comments underscore the importance of the Chinese market and its manufacturing base to Tesla's overall production strategy, even as geopolitical and trade tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to shape the broader business environment for multinational companies operating in both countries.
