Ebola outbreak spreads within DR Congo, raising regional alarm

An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to additional areas within the country, prompting warnings that the disease could cross into neighbouring states. Health authorities say ten countries bordering or near the affected regions are now considered to be at high risk of transmission.

The expansion of the outbreak has raised concern among public health officials, who are monitoring the situation closely given the DRC's history of Ebola outbreaks and the challenges of containing the virus across a vast and often difficult-to-access territory. The virus, which causes severe hemorrhagic fever and has a high fatality rate if untreated, spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of infected people or animals.

Countries near the outbreak zones are being urged to strengthen surveillance at border crossings and to prepare health systems for the possibility of imported cases. Regional and international health bodies have previously supported the DRC in past Ebola responses, including through vaccination campaigns and rapid-response teams deployed to affected communities.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past decade, including one of the largest on record in its eastern provinces. Containment efforts typically rely on rapid case identification, contact tracing, safe burial practices and community engagement, all of which can be complicated by insecurity, population displacement and mistrust of health workers in some areas.

Health officials have not yet indicated whether the outbreak has been confirmed to cross into any neighbouring country, but the elevated risk assessment for the region underscores the urgency of the response as authorities work to prevent wider transmission.
