Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says that border control exercised by Morocco around Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa, has "failed," amid a migration crisis affecting the territory.
Madrid announced Tuesday that it has requested "answers" from Rabat following the influx of more than 70,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave in late July, according to a government statement.
Ceuta, along with Melilla, is one of two Spanish enclaves located on the North African coast bordering Morocco, and has periodically been a point of migration tension between Madrid and Rabat, due to its role as a gateway between Africa and the European Union.
The precise details of the measures Spain is demanding from Morocco, as well as Rabat's response, were not immediately known.
