Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative CDU party failed to win any seats in the regional assembly of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in northeastern Germany, after falling short of the 5 percent threshold, according to France 24.
France 24 said it was the first time since 1945 that has happened to the party in a German state election.
The far-right, anti-migration and pro-Russia Alternative for Germany (AfD) finished first with about 38 percent of the vote, though a left-wing alliance appeared better placed to form the regional government, France 24 reported.
