Takashi Miike's "Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo," which premiered at the Toronto film festival, falls short of expectations as a follow-up to Abel Ferrara's original 1992 film and Werner Herzog's 2005 remake, according to The Guardian's review. While the premise of pairing the "Audition" and "Ichi the Killer" director with the morally degraded cop franchise seemed promising, the execution proves inconsistent.
The film is described as "a confounding and frustrating mess" that fails to balance its extremes of moral corruption and violence with the formal elegance Miike typically brings to his work. Shun Oguri's performance anchors the material, but cannot fully overcome the movie's structural and tonal issues.
