Despite Sanctions, Iranian Plane Lands in Istanbul

A government-owned Iran Air aircraft landed at Istanbul Airport on Wednesday, flying from Tehran, continuing the regular flights the airline operates to Turkey despite a sweeping campaign of U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's aviation sector.

Iran Air is Iran's national carrier, and Turkish destinations have remained among the few international routes the airline has continued to operate, amid widespread restrictions limiting Iranian carriers' access to many airports around the world.

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran's aviation sector for years, including restrictions on importing spare parts and aircraft, forcing Iranian companies, including Iran Air, to rely on relatively aging fleets and a limited network of international destinations available to them.

Neither Turkish nor Iranian officials issued immediate formal comments regarding this specific flight, while Ankara maintains economic and political relations with Tehran despite in principle adhering to some international sanctions frameworks.

The continuation of this air route between Tehran and Istanbul reflects the ongoing commercial and tourism relations between the neighboring countries, which have not been significantly affected so far by American sanctions imposed on the sector.
