US President Donald Trump said he was considering the choice between reaching a deal with Iran or pushing it into what he described as "hell", in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, vowing to "annihilate" what he described as the "Islamic Republic" if no agreement is reached to end the conflict between the two countries, according to Deutsche Welle.

Trump's comments came in the context of his annual address to the General Assembly, which was attended by about 130 heads of state and government this year, at a time when the post-World War II international order is facing increasing pressure.

Escalatory tone

Trump used an escalatory tone in describing his administration's options for Iran, without providing further details about the specific timetable for negotiations or the nature of the deal Washington is seeking to reach.

The Iranian government has so far not issued an official response to the US president's recent statements.

The remarks come at a time of heightened rhetoric between Washington and Tehran, amid reports of bilateral meetings between officials from the two countries on the sidelines of this week's General Assembly.
