The roughly 20-metre (66-foot) wall, dating from the Gallo-Roman period, was uncovered this summer on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the Seine a short distance from Notre Dame Cathedral, according to the French culture ministry.
Archaeologists have long debated the precise location of the Gallo-Roman settlement that later grew into Paris, and the newly found wall is being examined for clues that could help resolve the question.
Further excavation and analysis of the site are expected as researchers work to confirm the wall's origins and significance.
