The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won Sunday's regional election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, while the radical-left Die Linke won a separate vote in Berlin, according to France 24.

Both results led to heavy losses for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the broadcaster reported.

France 24 spoke with Anne Salles, a lecturer in German studies at Sorbonne University, about the results.
