Ethiopian Airlines Suspends Flights to 3 Airports in Tigray Region

Ethiopian Airlines announced on Wednesday the suspension of its flights to three airports in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, according to Sky News Arabia.

The airline, one of Africa's largest carriers operating an extensive network of domestic and international flights, did not disclose detailed reasons for the suspension decision or the expected duration of the suspension.

The decision comes at a time when the Tigray region continues to experience the aftermath of the armed conflict that erupted between the Ethiopian federal government and regional forces in November 2020, which caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including transport facilities and airports, before a ceasefire agreement was reached at the end of 2022.

Air travel is a primary link between remote Ethiopian regions and the capital Addis Ababa and other parts of the country, making any suspension of flights to Tigray have a direct impact on travel and commercial transport to and from the region.

Authorities in the Tigray region have not yet issued any comment on the decision.
