Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the United Nations General Assembly that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "patient zero" for spreading war in the region, referring to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Addressing world leaders gathered in New York, Zelensky framed the conflict as one with consequences extending well beyond Ukraine's borders, describing Russia's actions as the origin point of instability spreading through the wider region.

Call to cut Russian oil purchases

Zelensky also called on world leaders to reduce their purchases of oil from Russia, arguing that continued revenue from energy exports helps sustain Moscow's war effort. He framed the move as a way to increase pressure on Russia to bring the conflict to a swift resolution.

The remarks were part of a broader address to the General Assembly, where the war in Ukraine has remained a recurring theme in recent years, with Kyiv continuing to press allies for both military support and tougher economic measures against Moscow.

Russia has not responded, in comments available so far, to Zelensky's latest remarks at the UN. The war, now in its fourth year, continues to dominate discussions at major international forums, including this year's General Assembly session.
