Y Combinator's Garry Tan Urges U.S. Open-Weight AI Labs to 'Distill' Frontier Models

Garry Tan, the chief executive of startup accelerator Y Combinator, has called on U.S. artificial intelligence labs that release open-weight models to 'distill' frontier AI systems, according to a report published by TechCrunch on September 11, 2026.

Distillation is a technique in which a smaller, more efficient AI model is trained to replicate the capabilities of a larger, more powerful 'frontier' model, often at a fraction of the computing cost.

Tan argued that because frontier AI models are themselves trained on publicly available human knowledge, broad access to capable AI systems should be considered 'a form of public good,' TechCrunch reported.

The comments reflect an ongoing debate in the AI industry over whether the most advanced models should remain closed and proprietary, controlled by a small number of well-funded labs, or whether their capabilities should be made more widely accessible through open-weight alternatives.

Y Combinator, which Tan leads, has backed numerous AI startups through its accelerator program and has been an active voice in discussions about the direction of the AI industry, according to the report.

TechCrunch did not detail in the excerpt reviewed which specific labs Tan named or what concrete steps he proposed labs take to pursue distillation efforts.
