X Introduces In-App Trading for US Users via Cashtags

The social media platform is linking stock and asset discussions on its timeline directly to trading functionality, according to TechCrunch.

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, will allow users in the United States to trade financial assets directly through "Cashtags," according to a report published by TechCrunch on September 16, 2026.

Cashtags, which are dollar-sign-prefixed ticker symbols such as "$TSLA" or "$AAPL," have long been used on the platform to tag posts related to specific stocks, cryptocurrencies, and other financial instruments, allowing users to search and follow conversations about particular assets.

According to TechCrunch, the new feature is designed to close the gap between the market-related discussions that already take place on X's timeline and the ability to act on that information by trading the underlying asset directly within the app.

The report did not specify further operational details, such as which brokerage or financial partners are involved in facilitating the trades, what asset classes will be supported beyond general references to markets, or a precise rollout timeline for the feature within the United States.

X has in recent years expanded beyond its origins as a social media platform, incorporating payment and financial features under owner Elon Musk, who has spoken of transforming the platform into an "everything app." The introduction of in-app trading via Cashtags would represent a further step in that direction, tying real-time social discussion of markets to transactional capability.

TechCrunch's report did not include additional comment from X or from any financial industry partners regarding the launch.
