Woman Unknown wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival
Egyptian-Danish director May el-Toukhy becomes the eighth female filmmaker to win the festival's top prize.
May el-Toukhy's Woman Unknown won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Friday. The film, set in the immediate aftermath of Danish liberation from Nazi occupation, follows a young housemaid named Marie who fears her employer will discover her wartime relationship with a German soldier.
The jury also awarded the special jury prize to NAZA, a documentary about killings in Gaza produced by The Guardian. South Korean director Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love received additional recognition at the ceremony.
