Western Hawaii islands survey damage after Hurricane Lowell passes by

Damaging winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Lowell caused significant damage on Hawaii's western islands, knocking out power to thousands of residents, tearing up stretches of road and covering homes and stores in mud, the Guardian reported.

The storm did not make a direct hit, but fierce winds downed trees and caused widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to about 73,000 residents, according to the report. The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative said nearly all of its customers lost power.
