Weapons director Zach Cregger discusses reviving Resident Evil despite never seeing the films
Cregger's acclaimed horror films Barbarian and Weapons preceded his pivot to the long-running video game franchise.
Filmmaker Zach Cregger, known for directing Barbarian and Weapons, said he has never seen any of the Resident Evil films, even as he takes on a project reviving the video game franchise, according to the Guardian.
Cregger's debut solo feature Barbarian, released in 2022, grossed $46 million, while his second film, Weapons, released in 2025, performed even better and won an Academy Award for Amy Madigan's supporting performance, the Guardian reported.
Both of Cregger's films addressed sensitive social issues while defying easy interpretation, according to the Guardian, and his move to revive the Resident Evil franchise has generated a strong reaction among fans.
