Volcanic Ash Cloud Grounds Flights at Eight Indonesian Airports

Indonesia suspended operations at eight airports, including its main international hub, on Sunday after an ash cloud from the Anak Krakatau volcano disrupted hundreds of flights, according to the Guardian.
The disruption followed an eruption on Saturday that produced lava flows and booming sounds reportedly heard up to 435 miles (700km) away, Indonesia’s geology agency said, as cited by the Guardian.
The agency reported two additional eruptions on Sunday, further affecting flight operations across the affected airports.
Beyond aviation, the volcanic activity also interrupted some school activities and fishing operations in the surrounding areas, the report said.
Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, has a history of volcanic activity and is closely monitored by Indonesian authorities.
