Victorian Premier Ben Carroll announced Wednesday that Labor would adopt the Coalition opposition's commitment to introduce Queensland's Jack's Law, which permits police and protective services officers to stop and search people for knives with handheld metal detectors "anywhere, anytime." The measure is named after 17-year-old Jack Beasley, fatally stabbed in Surfers Paradise in 2019.

The announcement represents a policy reversal for Carroll's government. Experts have cautioned that evidence supporting the effectiveness of random stop-and-search measures in reducing violent crime remains limited.
