US Envoy Says Belarus to Release 25 Prisoners, Expects More to Follow
Following talks with President Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk, US special envoy Coale said Washington will lift sanctions on two Belarusian firms as part of the exchange.
The United States special envoy for Belarus, identified as Coale, said he expects Minsk to release additional prisoners beyond the 25 already announced, according to a report by TASS.
The statement came after talks in the Belarusian capital between the envoy and President Alexander Lukashenko, TASS reported.
Coale announced that Belarus will release 25 prisoners as part of the arrangement discussed during the meeting, the report said.
In return, Washington will lift sanctions on two Belarusian companies — Lakokraska JSC and the Bellesbumprom concern — according to the envoy's remarks cited by TASS.
TASS did not provide further details on the identities of the prisoners to be released, the timeline for their release, or additional specifics of the sanctions relief.
