US coal miners plead for benefits as black lung disease cases hit 50-year high
Sick miners face delays in benefit claims even as pneumoconiosis diagnoses surge, according to the Guardian.

US coal miners are pleading for benefits as cases of black lung disease reach a 50-year high, according to the Guardian.
The report said sick miners are facing delays in receiving benefits, even as President Donald Trump has spoken in support of coal.
Josh Armes, 74, of Grundy, Virginia, worked as a coal miner for 38 years in West Virginia and Virginia before retiring, the Guardian reported. He was later diagnosed with black lung disease, medically known as coal workers' pneumoconiosis, which is caused by long-term inhalation of coal dust and irreversibly damages the lungs.
