United Russia Wins Record Duma Majority, With 49 War Veterans Among New Deputies

The pro-Kremlin party won a record 355 of 450 seats in a vote criticized as tightly controlled, The Guardian reports.

Russia's new parliament will include 49 deputies who took part in the war against Ukraine, officials said Monday, after the ruling United Russia party won a landslide victory in elections that The Guardian described as widely criticized.

According to The Guardian, United Russia won a record 355 seats in the 450-seat State Duma based on preliminary figures, surpassing its previous 2016 record of 343 seats and giving the party a larger supermajority.

The Guardian said the result further consolidates President Vladimir Putin's grip on power and is likely to be presented as evidence the country supports the war, though it noted the vote was tightly controlled.
