OpenAI announced on Tuesday that one of its artificial intelligence models had managed to solve the so-called Navier-Stokes equation, a mathematical problem that has been posed for more than a century, in less than four days.

According to the company, this breakthrough illustrates the growing ability of its AI systems to tackle complex scientific problems that have so far resisted human researchers.

However, the announcement raised questions in the scientific community. A pair of researchers, who themselves relied on another OpenAI model to conduct their own work on the subject, wondered about possible plagiarism regarding the resolution presented by the company.

The Navier-Stokes equation describes the motion of fluids and is one of the most studied mathematical problems, although a complete general solution has not yet been established by consensus by the scientific community.

OpenAI did not immediately detail the precise methodology that allowed its model to arrive at this result, nor did it directly answer the questions raised by the two researchers.
